My Week in Cartoons 3-28-16

IMG_20160328_091110557 (1).jpgThis is the first of what might be a weekly thing.

Here are the updates for the week:

  • I got a cartoon published! Or it will be published in the next issue! This will be the first one I’ve gotten in print. I will post about it here when I get a copy.
  • I started a drawing class.
  • I’m working with a friend on a cartoon for a youtube channel.

Here are some stills from the cartoon. It’s about a family with the last name Worker. I had a more cavalier attitude about drawing it until I started. It’s definitely a lot of work. And I have a lot to learn.

And here’s the value scale I did for the class. I’ve never tried anything like this, or like anything else I’m doing in the class. I had to really accept that it wasn’t going to be a masterpiece or I never would have finished it.

And finally here are doodles.

And that’s it for this week.

Cool… Branching out in several directions at once… Hey, on the animation front… Did you see the news about OpenToonz? Animation software used by some major folks (like Studio Ghibli) went open source over the weekend. They have OSX and Windows versions (maybe more, I didn’t look). I downloaded the OSX version, kind of daunting to jump into so I haven’t done much with it… but it’s free and if you’re so inclined, you can get the source code and mess with that too!

I saw about it being open source now. I was thinking about checking it out. The way I do my “animation” now is I draw in photoshop and cobble it together in premiere. Honestly there are so many ways to do everything. I tend to get overwhelmed if I think about it too much. My cartoons are really just illustrations with mouths that flap open. You should make a short or a gif in OpenToonz and let me know what you think! Maybe you can do a gif based strip of sects?

Way way back… I animated one of my Fringe Kisses strips. Very simple animation. So far I do most of mine either in Photoshop or Illustrator, creating each individual frame and then putting it together in Photoshop. I have toyed with Flash a bit, but it seems people are moving away from that these days… so I want to see how this OpenToonz thing works out. The big problem right now is that the PDFs on the Web site they have for instructions are all in Japanese!

I have been thinking about trying flash too. And I’ve done some stuff in after effects… I know that Bojack Horseman is animated in Flash and so was Aqua Teen. I know the software is on the outs for development but it still seems popular for filmmaking. Bob’s Burgers and a lot of other shows are done in Toon Boom. I think it’s just a matter of whatever works.

Yeah… I wouldn’t discount something I already used regularly, but it’s hard to justify investing lots of time learning Flash if it will be gone and I should have learned something else… that + natural laziness keeps me from going farther into animation. I want to, though.
